The Thirteen
Temperaments

Temperament is not the story of who you are. It is the grammar the story is written in.

THE TWO FORCES

Reactivity

How readily and how strongly the emotional, motor, sensory, and attentional systems respond to change. How fast the spark catches, how hot it burns, how long it stays lit. Largely the equipment a person was handed.

Regulation

How a person modulates that response: focusing, shifting, inhibiting, and sustaining attention and action on purpose. Unlike reactivity, this force is genuinely trainable — through relationship, practice, and time.

Neither force is good or bad. Health is not found in either alone — it is found in the calibration between them.

THE FOUR REGIONS

The thirteen dimensions gather into four functional regions.

GOODNESS OF FIT

No temperament is a problem to be solved. Trouble appears only when a person is repeatedly asked to function in a way that is needlessly incompatible with how they are made.

Fit

Reduce the unnecessary mismatch. Movement for the mover, quiet for the sensitive, preparation for the cautious.

Scaffold

Lend temporary support for a capacity that is still growing, and take it down as the capacity arrives.

Stretch

Gently widen the range, one manageable step at a time, without shaming the underlying wiring.

This is an educational field guide, not a clinical instrument. When a pattern is sudden, distressing, or gets in the way of daily life, seek a qualified professional. Naming a temperament should always open understanding, never close a case.

THE COMPENDIUM

The Thirteen Dimensions

Thirteen ways of meeting the world. On each, higher is never better, only different.

THE ASSESSMENT

Chart the terrain

52 questions across the thirteen dimensions — statements, scenarios, and scales. About 15 minutes. There are no right answers and no winning scores.

You have an assessment in progress.
WHO IS THIS PROFILE FOR?

Myself

Answer about your own wiring, as it usually is across time and settings.

My child

Answer as a parent, describing your child's typical pattern — not one hard season.

{{ nameLabel }}

Answer for the usual pattern, not the exceptional day. Progress is saved on this device as you go.
